Dementia Prevention
Preventing Dementia & Protecting Your Brain Health
Looking after your brain now can make a huge difference later in life. Although age and genetics play a significant role in dementia risk, dementia isn’t inevitable. Research shows that up to 45% of dementia cases may be prevented through lifestyle changes that target modifiable risk factors — things we can influence through everyday choices and habits.
There are lots of things you can do today to reduce the risk of getting dementia, build stronger memory, and keep your brain healthy for longer. It’s never too early or too late to start!
We believe in “everyday steps” that are kind to both mind and body. Things like:
• Staying physically active - Regular movement—like walking, dancing, gardening, or swimming—boosts blood flow to the brain and helps reduce inflammation
• Eating well and staying hydrated - A diet rich in leafy greens, berries, whole grains, nuts, and healthy fats (like olive oil) supports brain function. Staying hydrated helps with concentration and mood.
• Keeping mentally and socially engaged - (learning new things, talking with friends, staying part of your community)

• Getting enough sleep and reducing stress - Deep sleep helps clear toxins from the brain. Chronic stress can shrink memory centres, so relaxation techniques like mindfulness, breathing exercises, or time in nature are powerful tools
• Protecting your hearing and vision - Untreated hearing or vision loss can increase dementia risk by reducing social interaction and cognitive stimulation. Early testing and aids can make a big difference
• Avoiding smoking and limiting alcohol - Smoking damages blood vessels and accelerates cognitive decline. Drinking in moderation—no more than 14 units per week—is advised to protect brain health.
And remember
” What’s good for the heart is good for the brain”
These small, consistent choices add up to a powerful defence—not just against dementia, but for a fuller, more connected life.
