Last Updated: 23/06/2026

Green Chances is a weekly social gardening group for military veterans, offering a calm, supportive space to enjoy nature, connect with others and take part in hands‑on outdoor activities.

Taking place at Green Synergy’s Hillside Community Garden in Lincoln, Green Chances runs every Wednesday from 10am–12pm. The group is open to veterans who enjoy being outdoors, working with their hands, and sharing time with others — whether that’s gardening, chatting over a cup of tea, or simply spending time in green space.

The project is grounded in therapeutic horticulture, using gardening and nature‑based activity to support mental wellbeing, reduce isolation and build confidence. Sessions are relaxed and informal, with no pressure to take part in anything specific. Participants are encouraged to go at their own pace and find activities that feel right for them.

What to expect
- Gentle gardening and growing activities
- Time outdoors in a peaceful, welcoming environment
- Friendly conversation and peer support with other veterans
- Practical, meaningful tasks or the option to simply enjoy being present
- A warm drink, good company and space to relax

Green Chances is about connection — with nature, with others, and with a sense of routine and purpose. Everyone is welcome exactly as they are, and there’s no need to have gardening experience.

This is good for wellbeing because

  • Being in a calm outdoor environment can make people feel more peaceful and positive, especially if they are dealing with anxiety or past experiences.
  • The group brings veterans together in a friendly, supportive space where they can chat, share experiences, and build friendships.
  • Taking part in gardening and meaningful activities allows participants to learn new skills, feel useful, and regain confidence.

It’s wonderful to connect with others and share real experiences of war. I feel really valued and listened to.
