My yoga class is Hatha Yoga for All, and I encourage the use of props and adaptations in my classes to enable everyone to access some form of the posture/ asana. As part of the class I teach yoga philosophy, yogic breathing and relaxation.

My aim is for students to go away with yogic tools to utilize in their life to combat anxiety and stress.

This is good for wellbeing because

  • Mediation/mindfulness and relaxation encourages the parasympathetic nervous system response of rest and digest. The parasympathetic nervous system is responsible for bodily functions when we are at rest: it stimulates digestion, activates various metabolic processes and helps us to relax.
  • The yoga asanas or posture encourage flexibility of the body combating stiffness, promoting balance and coordination and encouraging strength stimulating the bones to become denser, as in all forms of exercise.
  • Yogic breathing practices encourage the individual to be in the moment activating the parasympathetic nervous system and calming the mind. By breathing deeply we oxygenate the body.

In Yoga movement is combined with breathing. Breathing properly makes me feel more energised during practice and allows me to move further in the poses. Being in the moment encourages concentration and focus.
