Back to Support
Last Updated: 31/01/2025

We are a charity that supports vulnerable and marginalised individuals through 1-1 support, coaching and volunteering placements in the community. We work with young people, people with criminal convictions, and the Armed Forces community.

Step Together Volunteering is excited to announce a new initiative aimed at supporting women in the Armed Forces community created in response to the unique challenges faced by women within the Armed Forces community, especially those who have been or will be medically discharged, to address the gender-specific needs they experience.

This pilot project, funded by the Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust, is designed to provide tailored support and empower these women to rebuild their confidence and wellbeing.

Our Approach:

Connect:
• One-to-one tailored coaching and mentoring
• Link clients with relevant organisations
• Remove barriers to volunteering for those with complex needs

Engage:
• Support clients in volunteering
• Help with application forms, interviews, and first-day accompaniment
• Provide ongoing mentoring and recommend follow-on placements

Empower:
• Help clients feel positive about their future
• Inspire and motivate them
• Build new social networks

We have a 'Request Support' referrals form which we aim to respond to within 5 working days.

Step Together operates with individuals across the country and online services are available e.g. Microsoft Teams for accessible meetings.

This is a tailored service, and individuals will explore opportunities based on their individual experience and circumstances and the programme they are part of.

This is good for wellbeing because

  • Step Together Volunteering helps people find communities and form friendships.
  • The Step ToGetHer women's peer support group creates a non-military environment that recognises the gender-specific needs of women going through the medical discharge process. This fosters an environment form women to share their difficulties without the fear of stigmatisation.
  • Helps boost mental and physical health and wellbeing. We promote a sense of purpose and help people achieve their goals.
  • Step ToGetHer women's peer support group helps to remove feelings of isolation and fosters a sense of belonging. We remind people that they are not alone.
  • Helps people identify their skills and qualities, in addition to them gaining new skills and sharing their own knowledge.
  • Step ToGetHer women's peer support creates an empathic environment where people can receive practical advice and share their own experiences to help others in return.

Step Together

I feel Step Together has given me my life back. Volunteering has improved my self-esteem, confidence, communication and outlook on life. It is helping to keep my recovery on track. I can honestly say I cannot remember ever feeling as useful to society as I do now, and this feeling is improving daily. Having the opportunity to help others too is working wonders for my own self worth. I really can't express my gratitude enough for what Step Together have done for me.

Step ToGetHer women's peer support

I am delighted that we are now ready to provide an extra level of tailored support to female service personnel going through the medical discharge process. Based on shared experiences, empathy and respect, the project will be led by two facilitators with lived experiences. They will be able to deliver opportunities for women to come together in confidence, share experiences, give and receive support.
